DH Monday: 2022-2023 Getty Research Institute Graduate Internship: Director’s Office, Research Projects and Programs (Digital Art History)

The Getty Research InstituteThe Getty Research Institute (GRI) is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing understanding of the visual arts and their various histories through its expertise, active collecting program, public programs, institutional collaborations, exhibitions, publications, digital services, and residential scholars’ programs. Its Research Library and Special Collections of rare materials and digital resources serve an international community of scholars and the interested public. The Institute’s activities and scholarly resources guide and sustain each other and together provide a unique environment for research, critical inquiry, and scholarly exchange.

The graduate intern of Digital Research Project Management in the GRI’s Digital Art History (DAH) department and Director’s Office and will receive on-the-job training in project management, digital humanities, and collaborative research. Working alongside the project manager and project leads from the Director’s Office, the intern will be at the center of two significant multi-year digital initiatives—the Florentine Codex Initiative and the Pre-Hispanic Art Provenance Initiative (PHAPI)—helping to set priorities, designing and managing workflows, and coordinating large project teams PHAPI is the first systematic study of the global market for pre-Hispanic art, composed of two complementary projects: a research project focused on the Stendahl gallery archive and a cross-institutional collaborative project designed to foster the sharing of information related to pre-Hispanic art collections and their provenance. The Florentine Codex Initiative encompasses four outcomes related to the encyclopedic 16th-century Mexican manuscript, chief among them the development of the Digital Florentine Codex online platform that will provide, for the first time, full digital access to the manuscript and its transcriptions and translations, including and image and text search capabilities. These two initiatives present a unique opportunity to gain additional competencies related to the growing field of digital project management. The ideal intern is a self-starter who can work independently and in a collaborative team environment; has a background in museum studies, Library and Information Science, digital humanities, pre-Columbian or early colonial Latin American art history, and/or the study of global art histories and art markets; is interested in leadership and digital research project development; and is passionate about creatively communicating complex ideas using digital tools to reach scholarly audiences all over the globe.
