Recent trends in the art market

The Wall Street Journal recently reported on current trends in the art market.  Several dead artists continue to sell at record-breaking prices, while the value of many artists both living and dead dropped for elusive reasons.  Art collectors apparently feel confident about Renoir, Monet, Dali, Warhol and Picasso (whose “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” sold for $106.5 million recently).  Artists whose stock seems to be falling at the moment include Bonnard, Munch and Damien Hirst.   The Munch works that failed at auction this year have depicted “happier” themes, which may be less popular than his darker works.  Bonnard is simply thought to be suffering from “bad luck”.

This WSJ graphic summarizes these trends.
